Buying your first home is a confusing, tricky, and overwhelming process. But as a fellow home decor devotee, we know for a fact you’re probably letting this obstacle get in your way of finding your dream property…
Beginning the tummy-churning yet wildly exciting process of buying your first home?
We’re all too familiar with this feeling – the thought of living on your own terms in a place you adore… does it get any better than that?
But before you begin your search, we’ve got one MAJOR tip for you (and one heck of a reality check!). Hold on tight, because what we’re about to say will certainly feel like a step in the wrong direction, but it’ll actually make your search a gazillion times easier…
The #1 Tip for Buying Your First Home
Drumroll please… our #1 tip is:
DO NOT overlook or dismiss a potential property – be it an apartment, a house, or otherwise – because the decor isn’t to your taste.
That’s it.
We know this is hard, because if you’re a little delulu like we are, you’re imagining the perfect place to come up from the get-go. You know, a place that has your dream kitchen, the exact bathroom tiles you’ve been drooling over on Pinterest, and flooring that makes your heart flutter with excitement.
But the truth is, buying your first home is alllll about making compromises – on the decor, the location, and everything else in between.
Ofc, if the decor is point-blank hideous and you don’t have the money (or desire) to make substantial changes, look elsewhere. But most properties you buy will always need a little TLC, or a facelift, to get it looking how you want it.
Here’s what we would prioritise on your search when buying your first home:
- Check for condensation, damp, or mould (a simple sniff should do it!!)
- Ask if the water, heating, and electricals work
- Study the foundations on the exterior and interior (look out for cracks or structural issues in the walls and ceilings)
- Make sure the flooring is in good nick
- Confirm whether renovating or extending the property is an option for the future. And always check if it’s listed or not as this can restrict your plans.
We know – there’s so much to consider (even things we haven’t mentioned) when you break it down. But one thing you should never get hung up on when buying your first home is the decor. Got it?
